UCC to repatriate ancient Egyptian objects
08 Dec 2022University College Cork (UCC) announces today that it is to repatriate a number of objects in its Heritage Collection to the Egyptian State.
The items in question include mummified human remains, a sarcophagus, a set of four Canopic jars, and items of cartonnage (coverings) dating variously from 100AD to about 975BCE. UCC came into possession of the mummified remains by donation in 1928.

Inspirational leader recognised by UCC
27 May 2022An inspirational leader in the field of medicine has been awarded an honorary doctorate by University College Cork (UCC), as close to 200 medical students graduated from the university today.
Dr. Veronica Delaney grew up in Cork city and graduated with a B.Sc Honours majoring in Biochemistry from UCC in 1964. She would go onto become a leader in her field. Dr Delaney (78) is currently Professor of Medicine and Nephrologist at Mount Sinai Hospital New York, and was the first member of her family to enter University.

22 Apr 2022University College Cork鈥檚 Professor Barry O鈥橲ullivan has been elected a Fellow of the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI) - the first time that someone based at an Irish university has been recognised in this way. Professor O鈥橲ullivan, Chair of Constraint Programming at the School of Computer Science and Information Technology, who is also the founding director of both the Insight SFI Research Centre for Data Analytics at UCC and the SFI Centre for Research Training in Artificial Intelligence, has been recognised for his contributions to the field of constraint programming and his leadership within the AI community.

Pterosaur discovery solves ancient feather mystery

An international team of palaeontologists has discovered remarkable new evidence that pterosaurs, the flying relatives of dinosaurs, were able to control the colour of their feathers using melanin pigments.
The study, published today in the journal Nature, was led by University College Cork (UCC) palaeontologists Dr Aude Cincotta (UCC & Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences) and Prof. Maria McNamara and Dr Pascal Godefroit from the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences, with an international team of scientists from Brazil and Belgium.

Women from the Travelling Community Graduate from 'life-changing' UCC course
15 Apr 2022A group of women from the Travelling Community yesterday graduated at a conferring ceremony at UCC having completed a 鈥榣ife-changing鈥 course designed to empower leadership in their community.
Developed in response to community need, the Level 6 Leadership in the Community programme was co-created by the Southern Traveller Health Network (STHN); Adult and Continuing Education (ACE) and supported by Access UCC and funded by the SOAR Project. It serves as a model of innovative practice in creating an inclusive learning environment that enables Traveller participation in higher education.

14 Apr 2022In response to conflicts across the world, University College Cork (UCC) today announces that it has created a Sanctuary Fellowship Scheme.
Through this scheme scholars and staff members from universities, and other third level institutes outside of Ireland, who are at risk as a result of conflict or other serious human rights violations can apply for a six month fellowship in UCC. It is the first fellowship of its kind in Ireland鈥檚 higher education sector.

Advancing gender equality in the context of the climate crisis and disaster risk reduction is one of the greatest global challenges of the 21st century. Women are increasingly being recognized as more vulnerable to climate change impacts than men, as they constitute the majority of the world鈥檚 poor and are more dependent on the natural resources which climate change threatens the most.
On IWD we spoke to Dr Jean O鈥橠wyer, Deputy Director of iCRAG, lead of the iCRAG-GSI Environmental Geoscience PhD Programme, Deputy Head of Environmental Science and Lecturer at the School of Biological, Earth & Environmental Sciences in UCC.
