Visit of Ira Magaziner to UCC
Ira Magaziner recently visited campus as a guest of the UCC President鈥檚 Task Force on Precision Fermentation. Ira Magaziner is an esteemed strategy consultant and former Senior Advisor for Policy Development to President Bill Clinton, with a longstanding connection to Ireland.
In 1982, he authored the Telesis Report, which critically assessed Ireland鈥檚 industrial policies and informed subsequent national economic development strategy. Currently, he advises global leaders and philanthropic organisations such as the Gates Foundation and the Buffet Foundation and is actively involved in precision fermentation and biomanufacturing. Together with the Gates Foundation, he is looking at sustainable solutions for how to feed a population of 10 billion people by 2050.
As an output of the President鈥檚 Task Force on Precision Fermentation, UCC recently established the Cork Biomanufacturing Park initiative with Cork County Council, which focuses on innovation in biomanufacturing, industrial biotechnology, precision fermentation, Power-to-X and green hydrogen use. It aims to develop a new sector of the economy in biomanufacturing, using planned offshore wind to produce green hydrogen as an input into precision fermentation and the development of sustainable fuels, e.g. for shipping and aviation, through fostering partnerships between UCC, state, semi-state and public entities and industry.
The Cork area is well positioned for developments in precision fermentation and biomanufacturing for food and chemicals. By leveraging its natural resources, highly developed pharmaceutical industry, and intensive energy sector around Cork Harbour, Cork has significant advantages to maximise the growing opportunities in the circular bioeconomy.
