University College Cork (UCC) researchers are set to feature in a new RT脡 documentary which is set to air in January and February.

Change Makers is a six part series that will showcase leading research projects by eight universities in Ireland in areas such as children鈥檚 health, health technology, education, youth justice, gender equality and inclusion, as well as the environment.

Episode two will follow UCC鈥檚 Professor Brian 脫 Gallach贸ir, Director of MaREI, the SFI Research Centre for Energy, Climate and the Marine, as he returns to Kerry to help a community transition to a zero emissions region in the innovative Dingle Peninsula 2030 project. Working on the Dingle Peninsula 2030 project has been a very fulfilling and also humbling experience. I鈥檓 hugely grateful to Lispole dairy farmer Dinny Galvin, to Castlegregory Secondary School, and all participants, for their open and generous participation in this experiment in co-produced research to deliver a rural energy transition to a low carbon future. In addition, we in MaREI have learnt a vast amount about engaged action research from our partners Dingle Hub, ESB Networks and North East West Kerry Development鈥 stated Professor 脫 骋补濒濒补肠丑贸颈谤.

Episode six will uncover the world鈥檚 first global study of hip hop music and culture. It will follow University College Cork鈥檚 Professor Griff Rollefson and a team of global researchers who are investigating how and why this highly localised African American music has translated so easily to far- flung communities around the globe. Commenting Professor Rollefson stated,

"The core thesis of the CIPHER project is that local issues are global issues--and that hip hop continually highlights those basic human connections.  Creating a platform for youth from the Cork Migrant Centre and Kabin Studio with our UBUNTU project really brought that to life for me.  I know the Change Makers program will bring that reality to life for people across Ireland and prove that we're all in this together."

鈥淭his series will showcase not only the types of research happening in our universities across the country but the importance of this research and its significance both locally and globally for our futures. UCC has an active research community and is committed to utilising our world class research to continue to create knowledge and translate research into sustainable benefits and value for local communities and society鈥 commented Professor John Cryan, Vice-President for Research & Innovation at UCC.鈥

The series will be broadcast from Monday January 3rd 2022 at 8.30pm on RTE One television and the RTE Player. The Irish Universities Association partnered with RT脡 and New Decade TV to develop the series.
