  • Preview screening, with soundtrack performed live by the RT脡 Concert Orchestra, to take place on Tuesday, September 13 at Cork Opera House

Cork Opera House is to host a preview screening of an episode of RT脡鈥檚 forthcoming documentary series 鈥楾he Civil War鈥 - with the RT脡 Concert Orchestra performing the soundtrack live as the events of 100 years ago unfold on screen.

Based on the hugely successful and critically acclaimed Cork University Press 鈥楢tlas Of The Irish Revolution鈥, 鈥楾he Irish Civil War鈥 is the latest documentary collaboration between University College Cork and RT脡 following 鈥楾he Hunger鈥 and 鈥楾he Irish Revolution鈥 series.

The three-part series, narrated by Brendan Gleeson, airs in November, but a preview screening of the second episode will take place on Tuesday, September 13 at 8pm. Tickets are just 鈧10, with all proceeds going to Cork Penny Dinners.

The screening, with soundtrack composed by Natasa Paulberg performed live by the RT脡 Concert Orchestra, will be followed by a panel discussion by expert historians on how the Civil War unfolded 100 years ago.

Announcing the screening, John FitzGerald, Director of Information Services, University Librarian at UCC, and Executive Producer of 鈥楾he Irish Civil War鈥 said;

鈥淭he Civil War draws on the ground-breaking research of the award-winning Cork University Press 鈥楢tlas of the Irish Revolution鈥, adopting a new perspective on arguably Ireland鈥檚 most pivotal historical experience. Over three episodes, the series re-examines the causes and the terrible events of the Civil War, using leading experts and adopting the perspective of the ordinary person, to ask: Why did this war happen? Who did it really impact? What is its legacy?鈥

Dr John Borgonovo, one of the editors of 鈥楾he Atlas of the Irish Revolution鈥, said;

鈥淭he series integrates the expertise of a number of Irish Civil War specialists here at UCC, as well as academic contributors from other institutions. We are particularly pleased to see the scholarship from the 鈥楢tlas of the Irish Revolution鈥 publication brought to an Irish television audience. Our book took a 鈥榖ottom up鈥 rather than 鈥榞reat man鈥 approach to the Irish Civil war, a perspective that also features in the television series,鈥 he said.

Colm Crowley, Head of RT脡 Cork and Executive Producer of 鈥楾he Irish Civil War鈥 said:

鈥淔ollowing on from the success of both 鈥楾he Hunger鈥 based on the Atlas of the Great Irish Famine, and 鈥楾he Irish Revolution鈥 based on the Atlas of the Irish Revolution, RT脡 is delighted to again partner 草榴社区 to deliver a major new television series on the Irish Civil War.

鈥淭he collaboration has so far delivered documentaries that have had a huge impact on audiences not just in Ireland, but in the United States and Europe. This unique model underlines RT脡鈥檚 determination to bring to Irish audiences the very best in quality public service broadcasting, which in this case is only possible thanks to UCC and production partners Tyrone productions,鈥 he said.

The series is directed by Ru谩n Magan and produced by Patricia Carroll for Tyrone Productions and Create One Productions. Executive producers are John FitzGerald for UCC, and Head of RT脡 Cork, Colm Crowley.
