UCC helps local businesses
University College Cork has announced that it is to provide a free service to local businesses to advertise temporary and part-time work in addition to launching a jobs portal for students seeking such positions.
The new 鈥榦ne-stop鈥 jobs portal mystudentjob.ucc.ie, is a collaborative venture between the Students鈥 Union and Student Development and Employability. The portal, which was launched by Dr Ian Pickup Head of UCC鈥檚 Student Experience, aims to provide UCC students with the opportunity to gain access to a wide listing of temporary, casual and part-time work; in addition to providing support for local business with a free, timely and efficient way to advertise their vacancies to UCC students.
Speaking at the launch, Paul Moriarty, Director of Student Development and Employability claimed that 鈥students can use their part-time jobs to get an introduction to a career or area of interest that they hope to transition into after university, but more importantly part-time work allows our students鈥 to gain transferable experience which allows them to stand out from the crowd at interview and develop the skill- set much in demand by graduate recruiters.鈥 Commenting on the need to balance work and study, Dr Ian Pickup commented that 鈥渆xtra money earned from a part-time job can help students be more self-financing and less reliant on parents. However, balancing study with a part-time job means that students鈥 have to be ruthless about organising their time. They have to make sure that their boss knows when they have important lectures and deadlines.鈥
Making the job search easier for students was commented upon by Aidan Coffey, UCC Students鈥 Union President who congratulated the Student Development and Employability Service on the launch and indicated that the portal 鈥渂roadens the range of jobs available to our students and makes the process of finding a part-time job easy and equally accessible to all students on campus.鈥 Eleanor Donoghue, of Student Development and Employability and manager of the mystudentjob.ucc.ie, remarked that 鈥渋n the short time that the service has been in operation, we have had remarkable feedback from several Cork based employers who regard access to UCC students for such positions as hugely significant to their operations. Our students are bright, skilful, intelligent and adaptable. Allowing them to transfer those attributes into those companies brings about a highly advantageous situation for all parties which is mutually beneficial.鈥
Student Development and Employability supports all UCC students鈥 in order to find graduate positions, part-time or vacation work, on campus, within the local community or further afield in large multi-national companies.
